I am recruiting for highly motivated postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students to join my group!

Post-docs

Riddhiman Bhattacharya

Riddhiman’s research interests span the development and application of statistical methods across multiple disciplines. His past projects have ranged from modeling resource allocation to studying heart disease. Recently, he has become deeply interested in marine data, drawn by its richness and its potential for methodological development. Riddhiman holds a PhD in Statistics from the University of Minnesota, and brings a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied statistics to his role at CBIOMES.

Trisha Dawn (Incoming)

I am a final-year doctoral candidate in the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University, where I am jointly advised by Yang Ni and Jesús Arroyo. My research interests broadly lie at the intersection of novel methodological development and real-world applications, with a focus on causal discovery, graph matching, and change-point detection. Specifically, my current research includes Bayesian non-parametrics, optimization, machine learning, and high-dimensional statistical inference for addressing problems arising in spatial transcriptomics, single-cell multi-omics, alignment of network-valued data, and high-dimensional or network-valued time-dependent observations. I completed my Masters and Bachelors in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute and St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata. Outside of my academic work, I am formally trained and passionate about Indian classical dance.

Parul Patil (Incoming)

I have received my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Statistics from the University of Mumbai, India and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Virginia Tech. I am a Bayesian statistician with a research focus on surrogate models including Gaussian processes, uncertainty quantification, stochastic inference, and computer model calibration. Areas of application include ecological forecasting, environmental sciences. Interests and Hobbies: I enjoy running, hiking, and trekking – I have completed several Himalayan treks. I also enjoy making pastries and desserts.

Students

Ethan Pawl (PhD, Jointly with Paul Parker)

I am a third-year PhD student at University of California, Santa Cruz. Previously, I received a B.S. in Data Science at University of Texas at Dallas. I am currently developing variational Bayesian mixtures of experts for oceanographic flow cytometry data, aiming to represent complex dependency structures in phytoplankton dynamics at scale. When I'm not at work (trying to remember how to express various linear algebra operations in R), I am most likely searching for a new restaurant to try out or an old TV show to watch.

Ziyue Zheng (PhD)

../../img/ziyue-pic.jpg

My research interests include semi-supervised learning, functional data analysis, and interpretable machine learning. More broadly, I am interested in developing principled statistical methods that are both theoretically grounded and practically useful for scientific problems. I am currently working on oceanographic and biological data. Outside of STAT, I like scuba diving and staying with my two cats.

Dane Pearson (Undergrad)

../../img/dane-pic.jpeg

I am a fourth-year undergraduate majoring in Cognitive Science with minors in Computer Science and Statistics. My research interests lie in disease and ocean modeling/forecasting, but I am curious about biostatistics as a whole and plan to pursue a PhD program in it. In my free time, I love rock climbing, doing pottery, and playing guitar!

Emma Gius (Undergrad)

../../img/emma-pic.jpeg

I am a 4th year undergraduate student currently enrolled in UCSC's 4+1 pathway in computer science and statistics. I am interested in applying statistics to environmental research. In my free time, I love watching formula one races and movies!
